The challenge of getting to grips with the mechanics one after the other, coming to comprehend the finer points of gravity and orbital decay, and even building a space station become rewards in of themselves. ![]() Yet, while normally a brick wall of sheer technical difficulties would put off most players, there’s an oddly inspiring element at work. Often you will find one immediately loops back around to the other in an endless cycle of tweaking a design, launching it, crashing it, and then going back to the drawing board. While hardly requiring an expert understanding of astrophysics and space age engineering, they can be broken down into the act of building the ship and then flying it. After all, if you chose to build the starship Enterprise over a more practical design, you only have yourself to blame when it blows up on the launchpad. ![]() Both are true of other games like Kerbal Space Program, as they seek to offer players the unlimited freedom of starship design, but refuse to hold their hand even as everything goes to hell. In others, the sheer spectacle of losing is fun enough to justify itself, as your creations fail in new and exciting ways. Sometimes a problem is as simple as banging your head against a wall until you get it right.
